The NUTMEG CommUNITY was set up in 2008 in the borough of Barnet in response to the murder of a young aspiring footballer in the area. Darwin, NUTMEG’s founder, realised that many young people felt victimised by negative portrayals of them and were at risk of becoming disengaged with their communities and all that was happening within them.
Eager to do something positive, Darwin teamed up with his colleagues Claudio and Rui Jorge to form the NUTMEG CommUNITY with support from the Edgware Safer Neighbourhood Team. In September 2008 the first event was organised in Edgware during London’s Week of Peace to celebrate the achievements of young people. The event was highly successful, attracting over 300 young people from Barnet who were encouraged to ‘Get a piece of the Peace’.
After the success of the first event, there was great demand for more youth diversion projects. As a result, NUTMEG continued doing more E2G (Everyone2Gether) celebratory events which now attract over 600 young people. The Nutmeg movement has grown from strength to strength and has been nationally recognised for the postive impact it is having in the commmunity.
